Creating Magic with Stitches for Animals in Need

The Stitch Witches is a group of 4 friends (Giselle Johnson, Lorna Papayanni, Louise Kinrade and Maureen Burchell) from Kirstenhof who have been friends for many years since originally meeting while dog walking on the local greenbelt.

We enjoy sewing and knitting and during 2016, we decided to help animal rescue groups by using fabric scraps to make pet pillows. Very soon we started receiving nice lengths of fabric and decided to start creating hand crafted items for sale.  Our first craft market was held at TEARS on Mandela Day 2016. After that, we started being invited to other community market events. Whatever we sell, we donate 100% of the proceeds to animal rescue. By the end of 2016 we had raised just over R10 000, of which almost R9 000 was donated to TEARS.

We have continued with markets during 2017 – doing on average two per month, in addition to ad hoc sales and special orders.

While we primarily support TEARS, we also support other rescue groups with cash donations, food donations, assistance with vet bills, pet bedding as well as leads and harnesses.

The Stitch Witches are not formally constituted or registered as an organisation, but we do maintain a register of our activities and donations so that we can account for the money we fund raise and donate from month to month.

How can you help?

  • Donations of fabric, wool etc – what we are not able to use ourselves, we donate onwards to other sewing groups.
  • Buy from us at our markets - and we also sell from home in-between markets.
  • Spread the news – ask family and friends to also support our markets and home sales.
  • Help refer us to community markets where we can have a table at no charge - so finding us more outlets to fundraise for animals in need.
